Natural Hair Store Highlight: Valrosa Limited

Caribbeancurls will be featuring a variety of natural hair stores in the upcoming weeks and would like to start in the beautiful island of Trinidad and Tobago where a quaint little blue building exists as Valrosa Limited.

Stay tuned for features throughout the Caribbean in the weeks to come.

HOW WAS VALROSA STARTED?

Valrosa Limited was started in 2009.  Our Store opened in November 2010.  The business is owned by my sister and I.  The name Valrosa is in memory of our mom Valerie Rose.

In 2009 I left a corporate job and my sister and I decided to get into the Hair Business.

My sister and I have been product junkies forever. When we travelled we stopped off at all hair supply stores looking for new stuff, always in search of the perfect product for curly hair.

Ironically we started with a relaxing system, salon type items and Mixed Chicks.  We started the business working out of home and doing deliveries.  As the business grew we realized that a store may have been a better option for us.  As we opened we had people with varying textures who said “what do you have for us?” Soon after that we acquired Uncle Funky’s Daughter and from there on we just kept expanding.

We think of our store as a Lifestyle Boutique specializing in Natural and Curly Hair.  We are the only store that offers in store demos where customers can “try before they buy”.

WHAT MOTIVATED YOU AND YOUR SISTER TO START THIS BUSINESS?

Got tired of the Corporate world and we always had an interest in Hair Products so it just seemed like a good fit.

ANY SETBACKS TO OWNING A NATURAL HAIR STORE?

Customers are usually shocked when they see my sister and myself because we don’t have kinky hair.  We have made it our business to know what products work for the various hair types so at a glance we will know if it will work in a customer’s hair or not.  We work closely with our suppliers regarding products and what they can do for the various textures.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN NATURAL?

I have stayed away from chemicals for over 7 years (except for color to cover up the greys).

DAILY HAIR ROUTINE:

I am usually running late so I use a Leave-in conditioner in my hair followed by a finisher to keep the frizz out.

 FAVORITE PRODUCTS:

My new favorite line is Darcy’s Botanicals.  Their Leave in and Curling Jelly is great!  Still love my Curl Junkie Coffee Coco Curl Crème Lite with some Curl Queen.

SOME OF THE PRODUCTS YOU BOAST AT THE STORE?

Darcy’s Botanicals, Curl Junkie, Donna Marie Naturals, Bee Mine, Jessicurl, Free your Mane, Beija Flor, Hairveda, Uncle Funky’s Daughter, Curly Hair Solutions,Wondercurl & Mixed Chicks.

ANY TIPS FOR OTHER CARIBBEAN NATURALISTAS?

There is a product for every texture of hair! You just need to find what works for you. Many customers get frustrated by the thickness and manageability of their hair and tend to want to texturize or relax because it’s too much work.  Before you decide to opt for a chemical change, pay us a visit, we have options for you!

HOW CAN YOU BE REACHED?

We are in uptown Port of Spain at 102 Abercromby Street, Port of Spain, Trinidad.  We have a FB page (Valrosa Limited) and can also be contacted at868-623-6805.

I personally visited this store during a recent trip to Trinidad and I must say it’s one of my favorites. Great customer service and wonderful products! So whether on a short trip, vacation or you happen to live in Trinidad, I encourage you to show Valrosa some love 😀

  1. I am a loyal customer of Lisa and Sharon. This sister duo is amazing!!!!!!! They know their stuff and I echo the sentiment of the customer service, it is superb. I started off wtih Uncle Funky’s Daughter, aka UFD, I did the Curl Junkie and I am now on Darcy’s Botanicals. AMAZING lines! I have 3C hair, I know, imagine down to our hair is graded and rated, but there are products in all these lines for different hair types.

Valrosa Ltd. is a MUST visit!

  2. Oh em gee, I always pass this Valrosa sign and wonder what’s it about. Now I know! And since I’ve decided to go natural recently I’m so excited to know I can get products like these locally. Thanks for the post.
