QOTD: Is it possible to be natural without breaking the bank?

I got a question on my Facebook page today and thought I would address it here. Cindy was basically asking how to be natural without spending a lot of money on hair care products, treatments, accessories etc. She mentioned that she is easily influenced by all the product reviews on you tube and blogs that she’s subscribed too. However, she’s always on a budget and just can’t seem to get it right.

My answer to this is simple. If your hair doesn’t react funky to a product, then keep it in rotation regardless if its cheap or not a top ranked product on your favorite blog. One of my favorite cheap moisturizers is the Elasta QP Olive Oil and Mango Butter which does a great job at keeping my curls moisturized. However, it contains dimethicone and as a result is not a product you will come across often on a natural hair blog. Does this bother me? no, simply because my hair likes it.

The best thing to do if you’re on a budget is to research and experiment. Try something new even if it hasn’t been reviewed by your favorite you tuber. One of the biggest mistake most people make is to stock up on every product that a blogger/vlogger has tried or listed as a staple. Trust me if you continue down this path, not only will you be broke but you might never find out what your hair really likes.

Today I did a wash and go with the Elasta QP Olive Oil and Mango Butter along with the Herbal Essences Set Me Up Gel and had great results. Both of these products are very affordable and does not require ordering online. You can pick then up in your local beauty supply store or supermarket. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying you should go out and get these two products and you’ll be fine. What I am saying is if you’re in the supermarket and you happen across a product that has some good ingredients in it and it’s cheap, go ahead and get it.

So to answer the question directly, it is possible to be natural and not break the bank. Don’t be afraid to try inexpensive products as long as they don’t contain ingredients that can mess up your hair. Learn what your hair likes, relax and enjoy being you!
