Thank God I’m Natural

I purchased this book a few months ago and to be completely honest, only read some of the chapters. I love books and even though I have my favorite genres, I am the kind of person who would read anything just because. I got many good reviews about this book however and decided to purchase it online. My decision was not merely due to the good reviews but because as someone constantly eager for information on how to take care of my natural hair, all information is welcome. While skimming through the chapters, the realization that the majority of information presented in the book I had already googled, read on a blog or heard about from many of my favorite vloggers hit me and with a quiet acceptance I decided on which chapters I would read. It is a nice book to include on your bookshelf and keep as a reference if you’re not as internet savvy as I am or just not up to doing your research online.

I really enjoyed the chapter about relaxers where the author spoke about how it actually works, health risks and even had a few stories to share. I am in know way knocking anyone who gets a relaxer but I am all about health and thought this was quite a nice topic to include. If you have read some of my previous posts, then you are probably aware of the fact that I am all about ingredients. I don’t use all natural products but because I understand how certain chemicals will affect me as opposed to my hair (dead cells), there are certain products I stay away from. Chris-Tia Donaldson lists and gives suggestions for ingredients that have health benefits for our hair and those that are not (preservatives, drying alcohol etc.). Thus, highlighting the importance of label reading versus a pretty packaging. I also enjoyed the chapters on hair loss and myths/misconceptions about going natural.

I would suggest this book to anyone thinking about going natural, transitioners or those who recently BC’d. If you have been natural for a while and would like to have this book as a reference, then go right ahead and purchase it. However, for those of you who have been around the natural hair scene for a while purchasing this book will probably not add much in terms of new information.

The author did an amazing job writing this book and for that I give her 5 stars! Her hair story is also amazing, so if you enjoy testimonials as a way of encouragement then be sure to check hers out.
